Ogun Assembly passes vote of no confidence on Amosun’s commissioner

Published by

THE Ogun State House of Assembly, on Thursday, unanimously passed a vote of no confidence on the State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Olamilekan Adegbite, for alleged misconduct.

They described him as unfit for the position of a commissioner in the state following an earlier altercation between him and the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Honorable Olakunle Oluomo,  who presided over the committee of the whole house meeting, held at the Committee Room, of the Assembly Complex.

The lawmakers asked Adegbite to stop parading himself as commissioner in the state and urged state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, to suspend him from office and cause him to hand over all the paraphernalia of office to the Permanent Secretary and cease to parade himself as a commissioner of Ogun State.

The Assembly, had last week, summoned Adegbite and three others including Special Duties, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Budget and Planning, Leke Adewolu, Jide Ojuko and Ms Aderenle Adesina, to appear before it based on submissions from members on the need to commence the rehabilitation of roads across the rural areas in the state.

The duo of Adegbite and Oluomo had engaged themselves in war of words, when Adegbite asked the lawmakers to apologize for keeping them waiting for over an hour.

The Speaker, Suraj Ishola, called on the Majority Leader, Yinka Mafe, to move the motion  passing vote of no confidence on Adegbite and was seconded by Hon. Tunde Sanusi.

Ishola said, “Since the inception of the current administration, we have been doing everything within our ability to ensure that we have that cordial relationship that will translate to what our people are expecting of us as a government in terms of good governance. It’s rather unfortunate that we are having this kind of situation. Of course, nobody will be happy for witnessing this kind of situation.

“Even at all you are addressing your children at home, they deserve some level of respect.‎ And I want to believe that for us, we are component part of the system. We have the artisans, iyalojas; they are part of the system and they deserve some level of respect.

“The Ogun Assembly, the second arm of government in the context of Nigeria constitution, I believe that whatever we are doing, we must ensure that we put into consideration that respect for constituted authority. What we experienced this morning was a very bad one; I must be frank with you because whether we like it or not, nobody can do it all alone. We need the cooperation of everybody‎ to move our state forward.”

The Speaker appealed to his colleagues to allow the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Taiwo Adeoluwa, to speak on the issue on the floor, which was vehemently kicked against by them.

Mafe while moving the motion said, ” I am Asiwaju Yinka Mafe, I rise up this afternoon to move a motion that given the totality of the submission of over two-third majority of members of this House and deriving its power from the provisions of the Constitution, Section 192, this noble House hereby resolve that in the opinion of the House, a vote of no confidence is hereby passed‎ on the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Olamilekan Adegbite, for his misconduct and being unfit and improper to be a commissioner. And this honourable House hereby advise His Excellency, Senator Ibikunle Amosun to immediately suspend the commissioner and cause him to hand over all the paraphernalia of office to the Permanent Secretary and cease to parade himself as a commissioner of Ogun State.”

The House later adjourned sitting till next Tuesday.
