OGITECH rector warns students against cultism, gangsterism, others

The rector of the Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, Dr Abiodun Oluseye, has told the new students of the polytechnic to shun cultism, gangsterism, indecent dressing and other anti-social tendencies.

He particularly enjoined the newly admitted students for the polytechnic’s National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes to be wary of their associations on the campus so as not to fall victims of evil associations that could derail their academic journey.

Dr Oluseye gave the admonition during the matriculation exercise for the 2023/2024 academic session held at the Prince Dapo Abiodun Twin Lecture Theatre of the institution.

He described the institution as the perfect place for the students to realise their educational objectives, nurture their talents and be transformed into well-rounded individuals ready to make the much-needed positive impacts on the society.

He said: “I, however, wish to reiterate here that the institute’s management has zero tolerance for all forms of anti-social behaviours, ranging from examination malpractices; forgery of any kind, gangsterism, cultism, armed robbery, indecent dressing and other societal ills.

“Let me implore you to be careful in choosing your friends so that peer group influence does not derail you.”

He wished the new students a fruitful career during their stay in the institution and urged them to take optimal advantage of the unique opportunity to prepare for themselves an excellent future.

Dr Oluseye also told them that their grades would be determined by their performance, saying “from this very beginning your ultimate grade is capable of transforming you into greater realms of opportunities in the future.”

“Kindly remember that your time is limited. It is therefore incumbent on you to make the best use of the advantage you have,” he added.

He also urged the parents and guardians of the matriculating students to keep an eye on them and monitor their activities even while in school.

“Please, do not leave them all alone here; visit them occasionally when they least expect. Monitor them on social media to stay in touch with their lifestyles on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram among others,” he stressed.

The rector revealed that aside from having all the 39 courses of the institute accredited, plans are underway to float an innovation centre that has been specifically designed to train students in contemporary hands-on skills such as production of drones, air conditioners among others.

This, he said, is to give the students an edge in the society and to make them job creators rather than job seekers.

Dr Oluseye disclosed that as a foremost ICT Institute, Information Technology courses are embedded in all the school programmes which enable the students to graduate with minimum of two value added certificates apart from the usual National Diploma and Higher National Diploma awards.

He said: “We are in affiliation with CISCO Networking Academy for the award of Professional Certificate in Information Technology (IT) Essentials CCNA 1,2,3,4 and CCNP.”

The rector listed construction of roads, upgrading of some of the decrepit infrastructures in the institution, rejigging of the security architecture of the school, and payment of salary arrears as some of the interventions of his six months old administration.
