Ogidi community plans Chinua Achebe Cultural Centre

Published by

A world-class heritage centre to be named after the late writer and academic, Professor Chinua Achebe, will soon emerge in his hometown, Ogidi, Anambra State.

The traditional ruler of Ogidi, Igwe Alexander Onyido, disclosed this during the reinstatement and induction ceremony of the Ogidi Social Club of Nigeria, Lagos which has been moribund for almost 25 years.

Speaking at the event held at the Ogidi Civic Centre in FESTAC Town, IgweOnyido said that the ‘Chinua Achebe Cultural and Event Centre’ is one of the priorities of the community in the New Year.

The Centre will serve as a resort and resource centre for knowledge and leisure among other things.

Earlier in his welcome address, the patron and coordinator of the club, Chief Obi Iloabachie, described the event as an epoch-making one.

He said: “today marks an important milestone in the history of the Ogidi Social Club of Nigeria, Lagos branch. Lagos branch was inducted on 20th February 1982. After the late Chief M. K. O. Abiola’s political saga in 1993, the branch went comatose. After many years in limbo, Lagos branch is today reinstated with over 40 youthful new members. We express our gratitude to God Almighty and to our Grand Patron,  IgweUzoOnyido, who in spite of his tight schedule came to grace this occasion.”
