Offa Christians charge govt on insecurity, corruption

Indigenes of Offa in Kwara State from all Christian faiths under the aegis of the Offa Christian Indigenes Union (OCIU) have called on government to urgently address issues of corruption and insecurity in the country.

Speaking at the fifth convention of the union in Offa at the weekend, president of the body, Elder Segun Opaleke, said that Nigerians should be hopeful of socioeconomic and political progress when the two major issues were tackled.

Opaleke, who said aims of the union included promoting unity among Offa Christians, irrespective of denominations, added that its objective included promoting interfaith understanding for peace among Offa Christians and non-Christians.

Also speaking, minister-in-charge of Calvary Baptist Church, Offa, Reverend Samuel Adeyemo, who spoke on empowering Christian faithful for sustainability of evangelism in Offa, commended the empowerment programme of the union.

Adeyemo also charged the people to embrace peace, love and understanding, saying that they should continue to help the underprivileged as well as give out loans to traders to boost their businesses.

The patron of the union, Mr Ayo Opadokun, implored members not to relent in their efforts, calling on related unions to emulate the OCIU to make life more meaningful, especially for the poor.

Highlight of the event was presentation of 50 bags of rice, 250 yards of cloths, 50 chickens, and cash gifts to 50 widows in Offa by matron of the union, who is a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Sarah Alade.

Responding on behalf of recipients, Deaconess Atinuke Opaleke said that the materials would go a long way in alleviating problems, wishing the union progress and development.
