Of challenges, perseverance and basis for workable relationship

Published by

TO survive in today’s world, one must be ready to face myriad of challenges in various aspects of life. And it is only those who surmount challenges that get to see the silver lining after the dark clouds. The major trouble seems to basically focus on finances and this affects life more as it eats at the foundation of relationships and homes.

Many people find themselves at a crossroads of hopelessness that they give up and some commit suicide. This is why stories that give hope and tell of overcoming challenges in whatever form with perseverance, focus, hard work and commitment can never be over-emphasised.

Such hope could be found in the book, ‘Born under a bad sign,’ a 167-page novel written by Bolaji J. Apelegan. The book, a love story of what seemed like star crossed lovers, revolves around the challenges of two lovers, David and Toun, young adults who went through a lot of trouble to keep their relationship even in the face of persecution; false accusations, murder trials, oppression and layers of conspiracy.

The story creatively put together is a page turner that everyone can relate with and does not in any way reflect that this is the first novel of the chartered accountant turned novelist.

The characters are full of life and the transition from scene to scene awakes the imagination of readers and creates colourful images in the brain that makes it easy to understand the story and relate with its life experiences.

In spite of the near tragic occurrences, anguish and travails, the message of hope could be seen throughout the book, the characters determination to hold on and make something out of life irrespective of what they are going through is a beacon of hope to any individual experiencing challenges.

There is the feeling of the light at the end of the tunnel if one can persevere. And it is, indeed, a must read for people that have encountered failure, that have been bereft of hope, or those whose rights have been denied them countless times because of their social standing or lack of pedigree in life.

The book is not only a story that one will read to pass time but one that can teaches that light always overcome darkness no matter how long it takes and that the truth will always prevail. It also could be used to minister to those going through challenges as it emphasises the need not to join the crowd but hold on till the shadow turns to light.

It preaches that one should hold on as dreams do come true irrespective of what one is going through. David in the novel experienced so many overwhelming challenges; mistaken identity, false accusations, undue suffering and victimisation but at the end, truth prevailed and though justice was delayed, it was not denied.

From the beginning of the novel, creative element of suspense was employed and the book though a love story has elements of mysteries and crime. It brought out the malaise of our society especially the security agencies and the wide vacuum between the rich and the poor.

Indeed, Apelegan proved himself with his use of words, dexterity, creativity and connection of sub themes to create a good novel which served various purposes; give hope, point out the ills in the society and also entertain readers. Born under a bad sign is indeed a read for all especially those passionate about good books.
