Odun Omo Olowu festival will further strengthen communal living — Monarch

Published by

The Olowu of Owu, Oba (Professor) Saka Matemilola, has said that the annual Odun Omo Olowu festival would further strengthen relationships between Owu communities, neighbors and promote communal living.

He said during a press briefing on Monday that the festival had continued to showcase the rich and proud culture of the Owus, and that the festival is the kingdom’s flagship aimed to foster spirit of unity among the Owu people, both home and abroad.

The monarch highlighted some programmes slated for the one-week festival which started on Monday 23 through Saturday 28th October.

Oba Matemilola said thousands of people would benefit from the free medical outreach for his subjects and residents of Abeokuta.

He noted further that the 2023 edition of Odun Omo Olowu with the theme ‘The New Dawn’ has been specifically put together not only to celebrate and promote the rich traditions and culture of Owu Kingdom, but to also engage the youth through advocacy, particularly on the dangers of substance abuse.

The monarch identified substance abuse as a major issue confronting the society, hence the decision of Owu Kingdom to engage the youths on societal and health challenges it could pose.

“As part of our advocacy programme, the NDLEA will deliver a lecture primarily targeting the youth on the ills and dangers of substance abuse. Also, we are actively collaborating with NDLEA and NSCDC to address the menace of substance use, cultism and hooliganism in secondary schools across our neighbourhood,” Oba Matemilola stated.
