Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, says the state government will soon address the perennial flooding of the Warri township stadium and environs.
Speaking during an inspection of discharge channels at Ogbe-Ijoh market, Oborevwori said the government will soon award the contract, adding that the drains around the stadium were blocked by refuse indiscriminately dumped.
The governor further frowned at those who built structures on waterways, adding that such buildings will be demolished to allow a free flow.
“We started from the Warri township stadium to Bowen Avenue to the Ogbe-Ijoh market.
“For years, we have been having flooding issues in this area, which has been affecting the stadium and the environs.
“Anytime there is rain, water cannot flow from the Warri Stadium so the only way to cure that anomaly is to channel the water with drains and box culverts straight to Bowen Avenue to the Warri River.
“That is what I have come to inspect because we are going to award the contract very soon and Levant Construction Company has started desilting the water and I have come to check what they are doing.
“It is a difficult terrain and people have already built on waterways, all the buildings on the waterways will be removed.
“You can see clearly that people are dumping refuse on the drains, thereby hindering the free flow of water.
“All the drains around this area are not flowing because they are blocked; so, once they desilt the area, the water will flow,” the governor said.”
