The long-standing Obaship tussle in Oto Awori, a town in Ojo Local Government along the Badagry Expressway, dates back to 2007. According to the 1958 declaration, Oto Awori has two recognized ruling houses: Iga Oloja and Iga Ido Ogbe.
In 2017, the Lagos State Government installed Oba Josiah Olanrewaju Aina as the traditional ruler of Oto Awori. Oba Aina asserted that he hailed from Iga Oloja, following the passing of the previous Oba, Oba Akintoye Ibitoye Olugbogi, who was from Iga Ido Ogbe.
However, the Opeseyi family of Oto Awori challenged his installation, claiming that Oba Aina was not from their lineage and arguing that the process leading to his appointment was flawed. The dispute escalated into a legal battle.
On June 9, 2020, the Lagos State High Court ruled in favour of Oba Josiah Olanrewaju Aina, affirming his position as the rightful Oba of Oto Awori.
Despite this ruling, the Opeseyi family has appealed against the judgment, and the case is currently pending at the Court of Appeal in Lagos. The people of Oto Awori now await the next legal verdict, which could shape the future of the town’s traditional leadership.
