Obasanjo, Atiku and Nigeria: Forgiveness is divine

Published by

Some people are sanctimoniously pointing out what Olusegun Obasanjo said about Atiku in written form and in speeches, but they conveniently leave out what transpired when Atiku came visiting and remorsefully and repentantly acknowledged his mistakes of the past from which he admitted he had learned a lot of lessons. He vowed not to repeat those mistakes again.

Obasanjo accepted his plea for forgiveness, and as a good Christian. He acted in accordance to the teaching of Christ – Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who sin against us.  “But if you do not forgive them their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins (Matt. 6:15)”.  In the Quran, forgiveness is dealt with in many verses. “The recompense for an injury is an injury proportionate to it; but if a person forgives and makes reconciliation he shall be rewarded by Allah; He does not like the wrongdoers.” (Al Quran # 42:40) “Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love for Allah to forgive you? Allah is Forgiving and Merciful”- (Al Quran- #24:22).

If Atiku accepted responsibility for his past deeds and showed remorse and seek forgiveness with the promise and desire to turn a new leaf, I believe God will forgive Obasanjo also for forgiving him and supporting him, rather than support a man who is unmitigated failure, utterly incompetent and who never accepts responsibility for anything – his shortcomings, mistakes and failure. Let truth be told. By every standard, Buhari has got to the end of his ability and capacity. He has nothing more to give than failure and retrogression.

Human problems are not in making mistakes or committing sins but in not acknowledging our mistakes and atoning for our sins. Atiku is all up over Buhari in this respect of acknowledgement and atonement. Show me a man who accepts his mistakes and responsibility for his actions and inactions and ready to learn from them and make amends, then I will show a true leader of honesty, integrity and commitment, not perfect but striving for improvement and perfection.

Our dear Country must move forward, President Obasanjo should be commended for his Christian discipline and patriotic zeal. He supported Buhari for the sake of the Country in 2015. Now, President Buhari has exposed his limitations for which Nigeria and even the North bleed. Atiku may have his shortcoming but he will surely make a much better leader for the Country at this time. Only sycophants and those who do not mean well for Nigeria may want to foist Buhari on the Nation again. The North has a better candidate in Atiku Abubakar, and he will bring pride to the Country again.
