Oba of Benin makes requests at ancestral altars

The Benin Monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, on Tuesday evening observed the 2024 Ugierhoba traditional rites—steeped in enduring Benin history for centuries.

Ugierhoba, which is the sacred altar dedicated to Oba Ewuare’s forebears, featured a special prayer by the Oba, who was decked in traditional and royal accoutrements along with Benin Chiefs, donned in unique ceremonial costumes.

The first-class traditional ruler geared up for an unforgettable moment during the spiritual retreat where Oba Ewuare II danced to Ogbelaka Royal drum beats, marking the end of a glorious year.

Chiefs drawn from the various guilds also twirled the ceremonial swords (Eben), a symbol of authority.

They also exhibited their dancing skills as well as a measure of dexterity in their various performances at the event, which was attended by residents of Edo State and members of the Benin Royal family.

Prior to that, Oba Ewuare II interceded on behalf of the Benin people to Almighty God and his ancestors and offered prayers at his ancestral altars, nestled in the heart of nature, to a mix of cheers and gasps by onlookers.

The high point of the event was the special dance by the Oba, who presented the items for the traditional rites to his ancestors and made a symbolic slaughtering of the animals, supported by Ehondor (traditional butchers) at the event.

Eclectic Emehe and Osikhian Guilds spiced up the event with their melodious songs, while Ifiento Guild assisted security personnel, preventing visitors and cinematographers who scrambled not to miss the sights and sounds with electronic devices from breaking established rules that could invoke ominous maledictions upon themselves.
