NYSC, NGO donate wheelchairs to physically challenged in FCT

THE National Youth Service Corps, FCT, in collaboration with the Grace Foundation Project, an NGO, in Abuja on Friday donated seven wheelchairs to some physically challenged individuals in the territory.

Mr Abdulrazak Salawu, the NYSC FCT Coordinator, while presenting the wheelchairs to the beneficiaries said the initiative was aimed at alleviating the sufferings of physically challenged persons in the territory.

Salawu said the beneficiaries Mr Ahmed Salisu, Mr Saheed Saidu, Mr Mohammed Musbau, Mr Umar Abdullahi, Mr Samiu Umar and Miss Veronica Ayuba were drawn from various communities and area councils within the territory.

He said the donation was a collaborative effort between the two organisations urging the beneficiaries to make good use of them.

“Sometimes there is the tendency for someone to need money and then he or she just goes and sells them.

“Please do not sell these items but make good use of them so as to encourage those who provided them.

“We want your livelihood to be made easier that is why we provided these chairs for free. Ensure you obey traffic laws while using them,” Salawu said.

The Coordinator assured the beneficiaries that the donation was just the beginning of more assistance and support the two organisations hoped to extend to them.

“Our aim here is to do more for the people so that whatever succor we are giving to the society let it get to them.

“I really want to appreciate the NYSC Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure and the Grace Foundation for this initiative as you can see it has put smiles on the faces of the beneficiaries,” Salawu added.

Earlier, Mrs Joy Haruna, the Assistant Director, Community Development Service (CDS), NYSC, said the initiative was the scheme’s way of giving back to the society.

Haruna said the wheelchairs were given to the FCT by the foundation to distribute to the physically challenged in the territory adding that the same gesture was being replicated in other states of the federation.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr Salisu Ahmed said they were surprised by the gesture but grateful to the donors as they faced the challenge of going about their businesses on a daily basis.

He said most of the beneficiaries ran small shops but faced the daily challenge of easy movement to tend to their work.

Mr Saheed Saidu, another beneficiary said “I just want to say thank you for the gesture I am short of words may God bless you richly.
