NYSC denies involvement of corps member in Yenagoa police shooting

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied reports that one of its corps members was also a victim of a shooting by a trigger happy police officer in Yenagoa on Monday.

The police officer was said to have opened fire on a commercial bus driver belonging to Peace Mass transit, instantly killing its driver and one other passenger said to be a corps member.

However, a statement issued by the NYSC spokesperson, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi on Wednesday in Abuja, said none of its corps members was a victim of the shooting.

“The Management of the National Youth Service Corps, Bayelsa State, wishes to inform the public that contrary to reports making the rounds that a Corps Member was among the victims of a shooting incident that occurred in Yenagoa, on Monday, 6th January 2020, nothing of such happened to any serving Corps Member in the State,”

It disclosed that a visit to the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police by the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Lizzy Ojugo also indicated the same.

“Gratifyingly, a similar visit to the Federal Medical Centre ( FMC), Yenagoa by the State Coordinator to personally see the victims for proper identification further validated our position,”

To this end, the scheme urged the public, particularly NYSC stakeholders to disregard the report, stressing that it would continue to prioritize the safety of its corps members.
