NYSC demands state allowance for corps members serving in Ekiti

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has appealed to Governor Kayode Fayemi to consider offering stipends as allowance to corps members observing their mandatory one year service in the state.

The Ekiti State coordinator, Mrs Mary Chikezie made the appeal during a courtesy by members of NYSC National Board to the Ekiti state governor in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Mrs Chikezie who commended the governor for his support especially the newly renovated make hostel in the orientation camp , said corps members are contributing massively to the development of the state ,hence the need for the government to consider compensating them monthly.

“Mr governor, I am making this passionate appeal on behalf of the corps members on the issue of state allowance for them, they are always asking us when will the state start paying the allowance. This corps members are doing well for the state and I am pleading with the governor to consider this request,” the state coordinator said.

The Chairperson of the National Governing Board of the National Youth Service Corps,(NYSC) Ambassador Fatima Bala said  they were in Ekiti to inspect facilities on the orientation camps and to report whatever observation made to the government  for improvement or consolidation.

She highlighted some the challenges of the scheme in Ekiti to non-conducive Covid-19 Isolation centre, clinic centre and accommodate among others.

Bala added that the state headquarters of the scheme in the state capital needed convenient and conducive office spaces to function well, calling on the governor to assist NYSC in getting the desired place for the office.

While responding, Fayemi assured the NYSC management of determination of his administration to improve on the capacity of the scheme in the state in order to make it achieve it national objective.

“We are in the process of accelerating the completion of the Federal Secretariat, I am sure that will address office accommodation challenge.

“For other challenges, I will tell the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development to work with the Ministry of Works on how to salvage the situation.We do not want to undermine the safety of corps members posted to the state.

”We will do everything to strengthen NYSC. I want to assure you that we are ready to improve the capacity of NYSC scheme,” Fayemi said.

He, however apologised for the violence unleashed on a corps member by political thugs during the recent by-election in Omuo-Ekiti, in Ekiti East local government area.
