The Governing Board of National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) has lauded the Sokoto State Government and Sultanate Council over their support to corps members’ welfare in the state.
The Board Chairman, Amb. Fatima Balla-Abubakar made the commendation in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Sokoto.
Balla-Abubakar had earlier led other board members on courtesy visits to Gov. Aminu Tambuwal and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on NYSC governing board and management to cement relationships.
She expressed satisfaction on state government commitment to ensuring monthly payment of corps members stipends and other infrastructural supports at the orientation camp.
“I am quite impressed with the condition of the Sokoto orientation camp as it is one of the best camps in the country. Hostels and the environment are generally clean while activities are moving reasonably fine.
“Corp members and NYSC management enjoyed a robust cordial relationship with state government and Sultanate Council as well as obtain all the desirable supports from traditional institutions and government officials.
“This is just to describe Sokoto as unique in terms of adequate care being given to the Corps members deployed to the state, ” Balla-Abubakar noted.
She disclosed that the inspection was part of the board’s efforts to obtain direct information and interact with corps members and officials.
Balla-Abubakar urged corps members to utilize the opportunities of economic empowerment skill training noting the benefit in preparing them to be self-reliant.
The Chairman noted that the royal father introduced an annual prize award for corps members who distinguish themselves during the service year as well as donating cows to corps members during each orientation exercise.
She added that the monarch also host corps members in his palace during each orientation exercise where Sultan interact with corps members.
She further described Sokoto as unique in terms of taking adequate care of the NYSC members deployed to the state.
Balla-Abubakar said the gestures served to motivate the corps members and make them feel at home in the community.
The Board Chairman further congratulated the Sultan on his 15th anniversary on the throne and wished him continuous Allah’s guidance and protection.
She noted that the NYSC had the potential to drive Nigeria’s economic recovery process as the scheme could empower the youths endowed with various talents to achieve success.
She called on leaders to continue to live up to the expectation by providing necessary support to ensure the success of the scheme in recognition of its contribution to national integration.
