The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) during it’s last World Veterinary Day celebration preached promotion of equity and inclusiveness in veterinary profession.
The Chairman of NVMA, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Ifeanyi Ogbu in his address, the veterinary profession in her different institutions and activities have demonstrated equity, all inclusiveness and have invested in
diversity of Nigeria’s common difference as united nation.
He said the theme for this year’s world veterinary day ‘promoting diversity, equity and inclusiveness in veterinary profession’ came timely.
“In gender equality, the Vet has fulfilled the needed number of women inclusiveness in running her affairs. It’s important to inform you that the current President of the Veterinary Council is a woman, the current President of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association is a woman, the current director of the Veterinary service of FCT is a woman, the past Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria is a woman and in the records of FCT NVMA, we currently have more women member vets than men.
“For us in FCT NVMA, we have carried every member along in our leadership in the last 2
years. We have inaugurated different committee chaired by all levels of registered
veterinarians living in Abuja.
“We have attributed the leadership success we have enjoyed in the last 2 years to the” all inclusiveness” in leadership that we have decided to imbibe”, he said.
Ogbu expressed confidence that if all professions, religious bodies, trade unions, government and the people can learn from the Vet profession on how to strengthen diversity, equity and all-inclusivenes in all they do, the whole of African nations will get better.
Delivering the keynote speech, the Executive Secretary of Agriculture Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), Professor Garba Sharubutu who spoke on the theme of the celebration, explained that promoting diversity, equity and inclusiveness in the veterinary profession must be the collective responsibility of all veterinarians.
Professor Sharubutu tasked all veterinarians to be ready to take leadership role at all times.
On his part, the Chairman of the occasion and Deputy Chief Whip in the Senate, Senator Aliu Abdullahi while noting that the National Assembly had enacted various laws that support the veterinary profession in the last five years, urged the veterinarians to be proactive in maintaining standards in the profession.
He emphasised the need to promote diversity, equity and inclusiveness in the veterinary profession.
Senator Abdullahi said the profession was committed to best practices for the upliftment of life through ethical professional animal care health service which is the vision of the NVMA
The occasion organized by NVMA FCT chapter was attended by veterinarians across the country including the chief veterinary officer for the country, Dr Columba Vakuru, AIG Aishatu Abubakar Baju, the President of Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), NVMA National President ,Dr Olutoyin Adetuberu.
