NUT restates commitment to job creation, economic development

President, Nigeria Union of Tailors and Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Wessy Creations Nigeria Limited, Chief Wasiu Jaiyeola Taiwo, has restated the commitment of the organisation to collaborating with the Federal and state governments to make the tailoring profession an avenue to create jobs and engender development.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Wessy Tailoring and Vocational Institute, he noted that the NUT aimed to restructure its union to ensure that confidence was regained in the Nigerian fashion industry, institutionalise tailoring and fashion designing profession as a vehicle for national development, establish training institutes, among others.

The event, which had as its theme: “Bridging the Gap of Unemployment in Nigeria through the Private Sector Initiative,” coincided with the 60th birthday celebration of Taiwo, held on April 25, 2018, at the Bank of Agriculture Building, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, Ogun State, saw elder statesmen and dignitaries laud Taiwo on his achievements to bridge the employment gap.

Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who was represented by the Senior Special Adviser to the Vice President on Economy, Mr Olu Dolapo Bright, commended Taiwo for his effort at creating employment for youths.

He said his efforts were in line with the policy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, at ensuring that youths were gainfully employed.

Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, in his message to Chief Taiwo, congratulated him on his achievements, noting that it was an impressive effort at making a “remarkable impact in the society.”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in his message, described the commissioning as a laudable initiative that deserved emulation.

On his own, chairman of the event, who is also the chairman, Honeywell Group, Dr Oba Otudeko, said he was proud of Chief Taiwo for his steadfastness and initiatives, wich he said was inspiring.

Also speaking at the event, former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, noted that Taiwo had been his personal designer since 1988, described him as an honest, proficient, reliable, and good ambassador of the state.

Earlier the guest lecturer at the event, the CEO, CMC Connect Lagos and President, African Public Relations Association, Mr Yomi Badejo Okusanya, described him as an enterprising man that government could tap ideas from, and urged government to provide the necessary atmosphere that could enhance job production.

In his address, Chief Wasiu Taiwo noted that the vocational institute would create more than 300 jobs and called on government to encourage Public Private Participation through the promotion of the activities of the NUT.

Present at the occasion included: a former Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Alhaja Salmot Badru; another former deputy governor of Ogun State, Prince Segun Adesegun; Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Suraj Adekunbi; Abepa of Jogaland, Joga-Orile, Oba Adeyemi Olanrewaju Adekeye; Aboro of Iboro, Oba Abayomi Salako; the Gbobaniyi of Ilaro, Chief Femi Tetede, and the Rector, Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Dr Olufunke Akinkurolere.
