THE Bayelsa State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has resolved to suspend the strike action embarked upon by the union sequel to an immediate payment order of February salary to primary teachers in the state.
The decision was taken at a crucial meeting of the Bayelsa State Government and the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the Nigerian Union of Teachers at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Yenagoa.
This is contained in a communiqué issued by the State Government made available to journalists in Yenagoa.
The meeting, it was learnt resolved to have two members of the NUT to work with the State Finance Team to ensure quick payment of the February salary to primary school staff.
The State Government was represented at the high powered meeting by the Commissioners for Education, Deacon Markson Fefegha, Information, Hon Jonathan Obuebite and Local Government Affairs, Hon Agatha Goma, while the teachers representative are Ogbere Frank, NUT Boss in Ekeremor and Nimizuo Dauebi, NUT Boss Yenagoa.
According to the Communiqué, the Governor has approved the augmentation and immediate payment of the February salaries to primary school staff, while the union also lauded government for the training of teachers in the state.
The joint document also enjoined the state government to ensure the quick submission of the Rt Hon Talford Ongolo led committee for immediate action on teacher’s welfare in the state.
The statement frowned against deduction of money for identity cards from primary school staff, an exercise already carried out by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and emphatically demand that the deduction be stopped forthwith.
The joint communiqué was signed by following commissioners, Markson Fefegha (Education), Jonathan Obuebute, (Information), and Agatha Goma, (Local Government Affairs).
