SINCE the inception of the current democratic dispensation in 1999, there have been incessant calls for local government autonomy from various quarters.
But the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) is vehemently opposed to financial autonomy for local governments owing to the traumatic experiences its members went through regarding the payment of their salaries in the past.
Be that as it may, NUT has always been on a safe side with the modus operandi now adopted by the policy makers to separately pay primary school teachers’ salaries through the State Universal Education Board (SUBEB).
Policy makers in the education sector should not rest on their oars in ensuring the regular payment of teachers’ salaries even in the event that local governments are granted financial autonomy.
The National Assembly should take the bull by the horns and make the autonomy to come to fruition.
