The Office of the First Lady of Nigeria has called for a balanced approach in handling student expression within educational institutions, following reports that some students from the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences were issued queries over their chants during the First Lady’s visit to Delta State.
The incident occurred during the Renewed Hope Initiative’s donation of 10,000 professional kits to midwives in the South-South zone at the Dome Event Centre, Asaba, on March 25, 2025.

The event was aimed at motivating midwives to help reduce infant and maternal mortality rates in Nigeria.
A widely circulated video from the event showed an enthusiastic reception for both the First Lady of Delta State and the First Lady of Nigeria.
A segment of the footage, reportedly recorded by students, captured a playful variation of the welcome song. This has since led to disciplinary action against some students.
In response, the First Lady’s Office acknowledged the right of institutions to enforce discipline but emphasized the importance of allowing students to express themselves in a respectful and light-hearted manner.
“The Office of the First Lady believes that educational institutions should foster an environment where students feel safe to express themselves while maintaining decorum,” the statement read.
The First Lady’s visit was intended to inspire healthcare professionals, and her office hopes that the event remains a positive experience for all involved.
It urged the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences to handle the matter with fairness and understanding, ensuring that students can thrive in an atmosphere that respects both discipline and free expression.
