NURHI holds intergenerational dialogue on adolescent, youth sexual reproductive health

At an intergenerational dialogue between parents and the young people, the consensus of the speakers were that life planning for adolescents and youths should be prioritised.

Mrs Adesola Fanimokun, Youth programme officer, Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), Oyo state stated that expectation of adolescents and youths on sexual reproductive health issues were different from that of their parents.

She stated that many adolescents and youths are unable to meet their parents’ expectations because they are not equipped with the right information to make the right decisions.

Fanimokun added “we need to get their support for life planning for adolescents and youths. Youths need more than family planning; they need access to comprehensive reproductive health information and services as well as life planning skills.”

She stated that this is imperative considering the myth of sex as a solution to menstrual pain and that the moment one starts to have an erection, he should start to have sex and so on that persist among adolescents and youths.

Interfaith Forum chairman, Sheikh Salahudeen Busari, stated that parents should give moral and spiritual teaching to their children to ensure they can grow up with good values in life.

Mrs Kitan Adeagbo, secretary, Advocacy Network Nigeria (ANN), stated that parents should find a way of drawing their children closer and interact and be friendly with them.

She said they should create an atmosphere where their children can learn from them, create more time to know more about their emotional and psychological needs as well as show interest in their development.

National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Oyo chairperson, Mrs Agbeje Bobola, said parents should also embrace the social media to know what young persons are talking about to be able to influence them appropriately.

She said that more effort should also be put into the use of social media to build life planning skills of youths at all levels.
