NUPTE condemns 50 percent telecom tariff hike

The National Union of Postal and Telecommunications Employees (NUPTE) has called for an urgent review of the 50 per cent increase imposed on telecommunications by the federal government.

In a statement signed by NUPTE President Comrade Buba Nehemiah, the union expressed that this increase is detrimental to national development and needs to be addressed promptly.

The statement reads “This extreme increase, which directly affects millions of Nigerians, is not only unreasonable but also threatens the ease of access and affordability of Telecommunications services that are crucial for daily life communication, work and economic activities.

“NUPTE joins the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in unequivocally opposing the approved rate increase, which will place intende burden on Nigerians already struggling with the high cost of living.

“As a Union representing workers in the Postal/Courier and Telecommunications Sectors in Nigeria, we believe that this punitive increase is detrimental to the socio-economic welfare of the citizens, especially the working-class populace who rely on affordable telecom services for communication, education and business.

“This unexpected increase in telecom tariffs will make it even harder for Nigerians to stay connected, particularly in rural areas where alternatives to telecom services are limited.

“The National Union of Postal and Telecommunication Employees calls for the Federal Government to urgently review and revise this decision. We demand that the government engage with relevant stakeholders, including Consumer groups, Labor Unions, Civil Society and Telecom operators to arrive at a more reasonable and sustainable approach to telecom tariffs that does not impair the Nigerian people.

“We urge the Federal Government to act speedily and in the best interest of all Nigerians by reversing this hike, which is detrimental to National development and the well-being of our people.

“The National Union of Postal and Telecommunication Employees (NUPTE), is always committed in defending the Rights, Aspirations and welfare of workers in the Postal/Courier and Telecommunication and the Nigerian populace, ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and respected in matters that directly affect their lives”.
