NUJ mourns veteran journalist, Ibrahim Biu

Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of its pioneer chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Biu, describing him as a dedicated professional and mentor to many in the journalism industry.

Alhaji Biu, who also served as a member of the Governing Board of the Dental Technologists Registration Board of Nigeria (DTRBN), passed away on Friday, January 31, 2025.

In a statement signed by NUJ Sokoto Chairman, Usman Mohammed Binji, and Secretary, Muhammad Nasir Bello, the union extended condolences to his family, the people, and the government of Borno State.

“The news of his demise came as a great shock to us. He was an icon of hope and a guardian to many journalists. His legacy of excellence, professionalism, and mentorship will forever be remembered,” the statement read.

Born on April 4, 1944, in Borno State, Alhaji Biu had an illustrious career spanning decades. He began his journalism journey in 1964 at Radio Television Kaduna (BCNN) before moving to the Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (now FRCN) in Lagos from 1973 to 1975. He later worked at Nigeria Television, Sokoto, between 1976 and 1980.

Beyond Nigeria, Biu also served as an Information Attaché at the Consulate General of Nigeria in New York (1982-1983) and at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC (1984-1985).

A trailblazer in the profession, he was elected the first chairman of NUJ Sokoto State Council from 1977 to 1978, setting a foundation that continues to shape journalism in the state.

Alhaji Biu is survived by his wife, 14 children, and 16 grandchildren.

The NUJ prayed for Almighty Allah to grant him Jannatul Firdaus and urged journalists to uphold the values he championed throughout his career.
