THE Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) is set to commemorate its 65 years journey with a series of reflective and forward-looking events.
The anniversary celebration will take place on Thursday, August 29, at the National Merit House, Abuja, where industry stakeholders will convene to discuss emerging trends and strategies for expanding access to physiotherapy services.
Dr Felix Odusanya, President of the NSP, reflected on the society’s founding in 1959 by a visionary group of physiotherapists.
He said: “For six and a half decades, NSP has led advancements in physiotherapy practice, education and research across Nigeria. We have played a crucial role in enhancing the health and wellbeing of Nigerians and our achievements are a testament to our enduring commitment.”
The NSP, which became affiliated with the World Physiotherapy Africa and World Physiotherapy in 1967, now encompasses state chapters, special interest groups and units to execute its programmes.
Dr Odusanya emphasised the society’s evolution from its modest beginnings to becoming a prominent force in healthcare, driven by perseverance, innovation and excellence.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we honour the pioneers who laid the foundation, the members who have driven our progress and the patients who have entrusted us with their care.
“Our theme, ‘Physiotherapy Practice in Nigeria: The Past, The Present and The Way Forward,’ reflects our mission to honour our legacy while shaping the future of physiotherapy in Nigeria,” he stated.
Dr Odusanya highlighted the transition from diploma-level professionals to Doctor of Physiotherapy entrants, marking significant progress in the profession.
He noted that NSP members have been instrumental in establishing postgraduate programmes that enhance the quality of practice and contribute to patient care.
“The NSP has also facilitated the creation of the Postgraduate Physiotherapy College in Nigeria, an autonomous body dedicated to producing highly skilled specialists,” he added.
The anniversary celebrations will feature a public lecture, awards, honours and a fundraising gala.
“We invite everyone to join us on August 29, at the National Merit House, Maitama, Abuja, at 1:00 PM to celebrate this momentous occasion. Together, let us work towards a future where every Nigerian has access to quality physiotherapy services,” Dr Odusanya added.
