NSE marks 60th anniversary in Anambra, honours deputy Gov, Others

THE Anambra State government has pledged continued commitment towards eliminating wasteful spending through transparent procurement process to enthrone good governance.

The State Deputy Governor, Dr Nkem Okeke, stated this while speaking as the Keynote speaker at the maiden edition of Engineer Emeka Muoma Ezeh Annual Public Lecture Series in commemoration of the Sixtieth Anniversary of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Awka Branch.

The Public Lecture held in Awka on Thursday has the theme:” A Case for Good Governance, Role of The Procurement Process.”

The Deputy Governor, who emphasised that the present administration in the State, has demonstrated a commitment to transparent procurement process through the institution of the Tender’s Board to eliminate waste, said societies that are not striving for good governance are doomed.

Dr Okeke, who traced the United Nations’ eight basic steps to good governance, disclosed that the economic worth of Anambra today, is valued at three point two trillion naira, noting that its GDP would have been ranked seventeenth in Africa.

A Guest Lecturer who spoke on the theme, “Engineer Chris Okoye”, identified three drivers of good governance to include Due Process, Outcome and Impactfulness of the Outcome, stressing that Linkage between good governance and sustainable development cannot be overemphasised.

Engineer Ezeh noted that public procurement process is a key instrument for engendering good governance in any system, adding that building Institutions and good systems are imperative, as the absence of independent regulatory and inspectorate systems undermine all aspects of development.

Earlier, the State Director of Fire Service, who is also the Public Relation Officer of the Society, Awka branch, Engr. Martins Agbili noted that governance is about service delivery and explained that the lecture is in line with the vision of the Society which centres on continuous education for their members and the public on matters that affect National infrastructural development.

The event which featured presentation of awards to the Deputy Governor and others was attended by technocrats and stakeholders in the Engineering field in Anambra and beyond.
