Novena University holds cultural carnival

Parents have been urged to ensure that their children are abreast of their culture.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State made the call while speaking at the seventh edition of ‘Nigeria People and Cultural Day Carnival’ of Novena University, Ogume,  Delta State.

According to the governor who spoke through the Commissioner for Housing,  Chief Festus Ochonogor, parents should be proud to teach their children their culture, adding that communities should protect the traditional institution.

He commended Novena University for encouraging unity in diversity, noting that promoting rich Africa cultural heritage without losing sight of education has distinguished the university in all round development of students.

“I am happy with the rich display of culture of different ethnic groups in Nigeria.

“As an institution, you have to work hard to sustain this programme.  You are encouraging the younger ones to, as much as possible, understand their culture.

“Parents should also ensure that they make their children imbibe their culture.

“Obviously, the role of parents, communities, and traditional rulers cannot be overemphasised in promoting our culture.

“As a university, reach out because you are assisting the government to sustain our culture. We have been entertained, we have learnt a lot from your activities today.

“While we are encouraging cultural heritage, do not lose sight of education because we need to be educationally sound to meet the challenges ahead; I urge you to carry on with your good works,” Governor Okowa said.

Earlier, the vice chancellor of the university  Professor Godwin Nduka, had observed that “Novena University is a replica of the nation; the whole country is fully represented here.”

The carnival featured dances, showcasing of cuisine, dresses, among others.
