North-West govs seek UN’s intervention to address developmental challenges

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has teamed up with his North-West counterparts in an advocacy meeting with United Nations officials to seek for intervention to address developmental challenges facing the sub-region.

According to a statement by Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, spokesperson to the Governor of Kano State, the governors pushed for a development agenda for the Northwest.

The governors, including Uba Sani of Kaduna, Umaru Dikko Radda of Katsina, Mohammad Namadi of Jigawa, Dauda Lawan Dare of Zamfara, and the Deputy Governor of Sokoto state, collectively sought international support to address the region’s challenges.

The statement added that they sought accelerated interventions from the United Nations through its agencies and volunteers to address health, education, security, agriculture, and other pressing issues.

The meeting, which was held in Abuja, was aimed to solicit international interventions in critical areas of the economy, addressing unfolding developmental challenges in the region.

He added, “The  first joint meeting of the North West Governors with the UN officials provided an avalanche of opportunities to relate issues on health, education, security, agriculture, and other salient matters that are overstretching the capacity of states,”

This meeting followed a recent security symposium hosted by the US Institute of Peace, where the North-West Governors were briefed on strengthening conflict prevention in the region. The three-day conference aimed to support the states in addressing insecurity in Northern Nigeria and finding better options to mitigate the challenge.

However, the Governors, led by Katsina state Governor Umaru Dikko Radda, have collectively agreed to nurture a regional development agenda in key areas of human endeavour, a first in the political history of the region.
