No plan to reintroduce any form of fuel subsidy — Tinubu’s aide

The senior special assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, has dismissed the claim that Tinubu is planning to reintroduce fuel subsidy.

It will be recalled that President Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy, which had kept petrol prices low for decades, during his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023.

However, there has been speculation in some quarters of the media (not Tribune) that the president is planning to reintroduce fuel subsidy.

Reacting to the speculation, the SSA to the President took to his official Twitter account to dismiss the claim.

According to him, there is no plan in place to bring back fuel subsidies, saying that the subsidy removal is here to stay.

He emphasised that President Tinubu is convinced that the current price of PMS can be maintained without the need to reverse the fuel subsidy removal policy.

He said, “There is no plan to reintroduce any form of fuel subsidy. There is no condition to support any increase in prices at this time. President Tinubu is convinced based on information before him that we can maintain current pricing without reversing the current deregulation policy by swiftly cleaning up existing inefficiencies within the midstream and downstream Petroleum sector.”
