Oyo State government, through its Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education, in collaboration with the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), Abuja, has established a vocational training and youth empowerment development centre at Otun–Agbaakin in Akinyele Local Government Area of the state.
At the inauguration of the centre last Wednesday, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela, commended NMEC and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for their support for the ongoing vocational skills and literacy development in the state, just as he urged the beneficiaries to utilise the centre judiciously.
Speaking in the same vein, the Executive Secretary, NMEC, Professor Abba Haladu, said that the idea of community learning centres was conceived by the commission as a model that integrated all elements of adult and non-formal education programmes into one operational centre.
According to him, in an attempt to link literacy with survival skills or vocational education, as a way of addressing the challenges of employable skills among youths in the country, the commission constructed about 13 community learning centres across the country and equipped them with furniture items, as well as skills acquisition training facilities.
While commending the Federal Government for its support for literacy and skills education development in Oyo State, the Acting Executive Secretary, Oyo State Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education, Mrs Funke Bolarinwa, reiterated the determination of the state government to transform and restructure the state through literacy development in urban and rural settlements.
She enjoined community leaders to join her agency in its illiteracy eradication programme across the state.
