NMA tasks Edo govt on safety of lives, property

THE Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Edo chapter, has called on the state government to beef up security to ensure the safety of lives and property.

Dr Valentine Omoifo made the call during a press conference at the Doctors House on Thursday in Benin, following the kidnapping of a Chief Medical Director in the state.

Omoifo said that the general state of insecurity in the state had continued to increase following the event that happened to a medical practitioner on Monday in Irrua.

“An ugly incident that happened on Aug. 26, in Irrua, when Prof. Sylvanus Okogbenin, the Chief Medical Director of Irrua Teaching Hospitals was kidnapped in the middle of the town.

“The armed men killed two policemen attached to Prof. Okogbenin for his personal security.

“It has become obvious that there is fear and anxiety in this state and nation as at today.

“It is a common knowledge that we have been battling with attacks from Boko Haram insurgents, herdsmen, violent crimes, robbery attacks and kidnappings.

“Over the past few months, we have lost some of our colleagues as a result of kidnapping and violence on Okada road junction linking Lagos axis.

“The high ways have become unsafe and kidnappings have been rampant in recent times.

“Doctors in Edo state are no longer safe to carry out their duties due to recent attacks and kidnappings.

“Doctors will not be able to provide services with the state of mind they are in.

“If within the next 72 hours if he is not released, we may be constrained to call for further actions from our colleagues,’’ he said.

Omoifo called on the state government and security agencies to ensure that all medical practitioners in the state were safe.
