NLC warning strike: CBN begins disbursement of old notes to commercial banks in Anambra

Published by

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, on Thursday, begins the disbursement of the N1,000, N500 and N200 old naira notes in its custody to Commercial banks in Anambra State.

A bank customer at the Union bank Amawbia-Awka, Mr Charles Onwuka, disclosed this to Nigerian Tribune Correspondent who visit the bank to ascertain the directive.

According to Onwuka, the CBN vehicle brought the money to the bank at about 3:24 pm and immediately the bank cashiers commences dispensation to the awaiting customers.

“We are happy with the development. The NLC warning strike has helped us. This is the kind of leadership Nigeria masses want. So without the threat of NLC, the CBN would have continued keeping people’s money in their custody.

He said that the development would end the two-month-long Naira scarcity in the country.

Onwuka, appealed to both CBN and the commercial banks not to stop, noting that the development will now enable common Nigerians to withdraw more money for their day-to-day activities.

Nigerian Tribune also gathered that commercial banks at Onitsha and Nnewi got the CBN disbursement as well.

It was learnt that the latest directive comes on the heels of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, planned nationwide strike and protests in CBN offices following the hardship created by the bank’s naira redesign policy.
