NLC trains labour union leaders, stresses importance of education in trade unionism

Published by

THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has enjoined labour leaders in the country to build capacity in requisite labour knowledge to enable them engage employers for the common good of workers.

General Secretary of the congress, Comrade Ismail Bello, who made the charge at the opening day of the congress’ state level school for labour in Abuja, further said that education is key to the success of trade union movement.

Represented by the congress’ Head of International and National Assembly Liaison, Comrade Uche Ekwe, Bello told newsmen that NLC state level school is holding simultaneously in states of the federation.

He also noted that about 10 states have commenced the programme. He added that the education exercise would last for 10 weeks.

In his words, “The NLC is taking back workers’ education to the grassroot of the working people or the shore floor of the branches. You can see that the participants are branch representatives, and this is to rekindle trade union education, because trade union education is key to the development of the labour movement.

“This is also for them to be abreast with the class struggle. There are two classes, the first is for those who control the means in the society and the second is for those who doesn’t control anything. Workers belong to this class, they have their allies in the peasant farmers, progressive intelligentsia and the other intelligentsia are the allies of those who control the means, they are the ones that develop their modules or theories that the upper class use to keep the lower class in dark of knowledge”.

Echoing the Acting General Secretary’s position, NLC FCT council chairperson, Comrade Alhassan Yakub, said the programme is to keep unions leadership informed and enlightened on the operation of trade union activism.

He added that the participants, who are drawn from various affiliate members of the NLC, will be better equipped to carry out their activities after going through the modules of the programme.

Comrade Yakub further advised the participants to pay key attention to all the 10 modules so that they can make their affiliate unions proud.
