NLC secures release of 23 prison inmates in Gombe

GOMBE State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has secured the release of 23 prisons inmates of the Gombe Main Prisons after spending the sum of N200,000 for the payment of fines for them as well as donated non-food items to them.

The State Chairman of the NLC, Haruna Kamara disclosed this while speaking with Journalists in Gombe shortly after their visitation to Gombe prison saying that the gesture was part of the activities of NLC to mark its 40th anniversary.

According to him, the donated items were eight robber mats, 200 buckets, 200 rubber flats, 200 spoons, three cartoons of washing soap, three cartoons of bathing soap and five bags of detergent.

Haruna Kamara further called on the authority concern and other wealthy individuals and organisations to contribute their own part toward decongestion of prisons and have better facilities in prison.

“What we have seen today is unbearable, hence the need of authority concern to revisit the issues of prisons in this country, because to me prison is a treatment centre and rehabilitation,” he said.

The NLC Chairman added that “Therefore the prison inmates should be treated with high level of humility and responsibility so that when they come out to be better members of the society.”

He also said that the union has donated beverages and non-food items to the Gombe State Specialist Hospital for the well being of the parents.

He explained that, “The items were meant for the Pediatric and Maternity wards, to enhance the well-being of humanity, let them feel they are loved and the items are Five cartons of Ceralac, One carton of Milk, Two cartons of 123 peak powdered milk, 23 cartons of diaper and two bags of detergent.”

“Others are three cartons of Bournvita, three cartons of powdered milk, 15 cartons of Sanitary Pads, one bag of sugar and one carton of disinfectant,” he added

In their responses, Dr Arnold Abel Medical Director Specialist Hospital Gombe, and the Deputy Comptroller in-charge of Gombe Main Prisons, Ibrahim Gide, commended the NLC for the gesture and assured that the items will reach the targetted beneficiaries.
