NLC decries gale of defection, urges politicians to focus on moving nation’s democracy forward

THE Bayelsa Chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged politicians to stop the gale of defection and play politics by the rules to safeguard democracy in the country.

Mr John Ndiomu, the state Chairman of NLC, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Yenagoa.

Ndiomu decried the gale of defection from one party to another and urged political actors to focus on what would drive development for the people.

The chairman cautioned against repeating the old mistakes, stressing that defection would not impact on national development in any form like job creation and provision of basic amenities.

NAN recalls that many politicians have defected from their party to another.

They include the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, Senate Minority leader, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, as well as some state governors.

“Well, I will not say that our democracy is under threat or that we are going backwards; my concern is that our politicians are yet to learn their lessons because the current issue of defection is indicating that they are going to repeat the old mistakes in the forthcoming elections.

“My question here is are the defectors defecting for the good interest of Nigerians or for their selfish interest?

“It`s high time we learnt from the past in order not to repeat the old mistakes.

“In the forthcoming elections, we want politicians who have the interest of Nigerians at heart. The electorate should be mindful not to vote for politicians that have failed the people,” Ndiomu said.
