COVID-19, NIS, negative
THE Nigerian Immigration Service has inaugurated the Federal Capital Territory command migrant e-registration centre and clinic at Gwagwalada, Abuja.
Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammad Babandede, who inaugurated the projects, reaffirmed the commitment of the management to strengthen the service for optimal service delivery.
It will be recalled that e-registration for migrants was launched in July 2019 by President Muhammadu Buhari with the establishment of registration centres in some states, including FCT.
Babandede said it was the statutory responsibility of Immigration Service to maintain a registry of migrants in the country.
The growing insecurity in the country has also necessitated that a proper database of migrants is maintained. Apart from Boko Haram insurgency, the rate of kidnapping for ransom and activities of armed bandits have been on the increase.
The NIS chief said: “The exercise will help to build a formidable database for migrants and ensure effective border management”.
He urged officers and men of the command to be dedicated and professional in their assigned tasks, adding that the service was moving towards digitisation.
He also enjoined on them to be in tune up with modern trends so as to be relevant and effective in delivering the mandate of the service.
The Comptroller, FCT Command, Angela Esekhaigbe, lauded the support of the immigration boss which has placed the command strategically alongside the eadquarters for service delivery to the public.
Heads of security and response agencies in the FCT and chairmen of five area councils of the FCT attended the occasion.
