NIMC targets to register 180m Nigerians by 2020, says official

THE Anambra State Co-ordinator of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mrs Bibian Ekweonu, has charged the citizenry to be alive to their civic responsibilities.

Speaking in Awka over the weekend, during a one-day sensitisation programme organised for the field officers of the National Orientation Agency, Mrs Ekweonu advised the people of the South-East geopolitical zone, to take the active part in the ongoing National Identity Card registration by the Commission which she said is free.

She stressed the need for the citizenry to always embrace government programmes, policies and activities, adding that the Commission is targeting to register at least one hundred and eighty million Nigerians by 2020.

Mrs Ekweonu noted that the registration exercise is meant for every Nigerian including the children and called on Mothers to take advantage of the school vacation to register their children.

Earlier, the State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Mr Charles Nwoji, described the National Identity Card as important as the Permanent Voter’s Card.

The State Manager of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr Chukwuemeka Modebelu, urged the National Orientation Agency in the State to partner the commission in educating the people on the importance of the National Identification Number harmonisation programme through its grass-roots sensitisation and mobilisation mechanisms.
