IT was a strangely surreal sight that I beheld on the Abuja-Kaduna highway on March 22, 2017. An Air Force helicopter gunship and a conventional helicopter air-patrol were hovering overhead in order to secure that motor-way.
On land could be seenpolice patrol vehicles stationed every two kilometeres apart. In addition, there was an admixture of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) patrols along this highway as well as contingents of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Is this Nigeria? Oh yes, this is the true Nigeria.
Now that real human beings, the affluent Nigerians, have their flights diverted from Abuja to Kaduna, the arterial expressway must be maintained and kept in top shape so as not to offend the big people.
However, what is good for the Abuja-Kaduna highway should also be good for the Lagos-Ibadan highway, the Port Harcourt-Warri highway, the Onitsha-Owerri highway, the Warri-Benin highway, the Katsina-Kano highway, the Makurdi-Wurukum highway, the Lagos-Abeokuta highways, among others.
