Interview

Nigeria’s founding fathers will be disappointed with Nigeria today —Tsav

Abubakar Tsav, a former Commissioner of Police and a social crusader is one of the most critical voices in the North. In this interview with JOHNSON BABAJIDE, he speaks about the state of the nation and Nigeria’s 58 years of independence.

Nigeria will be 58 tomorrow, how will you describe the nation so far?

Leadership is our problem but to me, I think President MuhammaduBuhari with his leadership is moving the nation gradually to a better society. Though as human one is bound to make mistakes, what has destroyed us as a country is corruption, dishonesty and unfairness. Once we are able to get over all these and to play politics as it should be played, everything in this country will go well. And we are moving towards that direction but the only thing is to give Buhari the opportunity to continue again.

But it seems that the country has deviated from the path of growth the forefathers bequeathed to us; do you think they will be happy with the present state of the country?

Actually, if the nationalists were to come back and see what we have made of the country they left behind, they will be disappointed in us, because what is happening in the nation now is contrary to what they fought for. And why it is so is because we have shown bitterness in politics and these have been taken to religious circles, where the leaders will be teaching the followers not to vote for a particular candidate and this should not be so.

So all these boil down to corruption in every sphere of our lives, but if we are able to get rid of these the country will grow faster than we thought. Luckily, Buhari who is there now has the tendency of taking the country out of the backwardness, because he is not greedy and not corrupt.
