Nigeria has been acknowledged as one of the countries that will take part in the Rio 2016 Olympics scheduled to kick off on Friday, as Nigeria’s flag was hoisted among the six nations on the ground for the Games as of the time of filing this report.
This followed the arrival of members of Team Nigeria (wrestlers) in Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday night for the quadrennial Games.
President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, confirmed the arrival of the nation’s wrestling team in Rio, through his twitter handle, Daniel Igali @dynamiteigali.
“Nigeria’s flag was officially raised amongst six other countries. Nigeria is now officially in the Rio Olympics,” Igali, a former freestyle wrestler who won the Sydney 2000 Olympics gold for Canada tweeted.
According to Igali, the flag raising ceremony served as the official reception of the team Nigeria to Rio, as he added that the wrestlers on arrival proceeded to the athletes village for accreditation.
UK-based canoeist, Johny Akinyemi, was the first Team Nigeria athlete to arrive in Rio six days ago.
Akinyemi who also represented Nigeria at London 2012 will compete in the men’s K-1 class.
Already, table tennis star, Funke Oshonaike, will lead Team Nigeria during the opening ceremonies of the Rio Olympics billed for the Maracana Stadium tomorrow.
Oshonaike, who is making her sixth Olympics appearance, is also the assistant Team Nigeria Captain to Mikel Obi, and will take the Olympic oath during the opening ceremonies in the name of all the competitors.
