Nigerians will decide 2027 general elections not Jonathan — Group

Published by

A social reform group, The Crusader, has said that Nigerians, not the immediate past First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, will determine the outcome of the 2027 general elections.

This follows Dame Jonathan’s recent comment pledging to campaign alongside current First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, while insisting she has no intention of returning to Aso Rock.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Adesola Babafemi, The Crusader emphasised that the Nigerian electorate alone will decide the political future of former President Goodluck Jonathan if he chooses to contest in 2027.

“Dame Patience knows very well that if her husband decides to run for the presidency in 2027, he will receive overwhelming support from Nigerians. However, she will certainly never be First Lady again, but the people are ready to vote for him en masse,” Babafemi said.

The group also praised Goodluck Jonathan’s younger wife, describing her as “a refined, humane, and cerebral woman who fits perfectly into the role of First Lady.”

Commenting on the federal government’s decision to return properties previously seized from Dame Patience by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the group questioned her alignment with the ruling party and her motives.

Furthermore, The Crusader urged Dame Jonathan to desist from making public statements as though she speaks on behalf of her husband.

“We call on her to desist from implying that she is the spokesperson for the former president, a position she does not hold,” Babafemi added.

The group criticised her past actions as First Lady, describing her tenure from 2010 to 2015 as “theatrical” and damaging to the dignity of the office.

“Her tenure ridiculed the Office of the First Lady, and it is time for the public to recognise that her past actions do not reflect the values we need in leadership today,” the statement said.

The Crusader concluded by reiterating that the final decision rests with the Nigerian people, who will determine the political viability of the Jonathan family ahead of the 2027 elections.
