Nigerians react to Tinubu’s approval of N70,000 as new minimum wage

Published by

The recent announcement by President Bola Tinubu that N70,000 will be the new minimum wage has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media.

Many Nigerians have taken to Twitter, Facebook, and other online platforms to express their thoughts on the new wage policy.

While some netizens have welcomed the increase, others have expressed skepticism about its implementation and the impact it will have on the economy.

Some have also questioned the timing of the announcement, with others praising the president for taking a step in the right direction.

On Twitter, @shittu10 wrote, “Well, 133% increase on minimum wage is a massive jump. Also, agreeing to the 3-year review cycle instead of 5 years is also a very good one. God bless everyone for the final resolution. 🙏 On to the next challenge @officialABAT”.

@hurpzy23 opined, “At least 100k but 70k is a no no in this economy sir”.

@UnlimitedEniola posted on X that “$39 should be celebrated right?
It’s actually a big slap. Meanwhile, what’s the government doing on price control? Inflation? Unemployment? And food security?

“Tinubu ignores NLC living wage demand, approves $39 as workers pay. President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers. President Tinubu announced the decisions at the meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC on Thursday in Abuja, the second time the parties met in 7 days.

@oteessolutions1 wrote, “Government officials, politicians, governors, Senate and HOR, and all political appointees must also earn a minimum wage. Let us change the salary structure. Without it. There is no need to keep deceiving ourselves.”

@bummiearo wrote, “This is a good development.”

The reactions on social media reflect the mixed sentiments of Nigerians on the new minimum wage policy.

While some are optimistic about its impact, others are more cautious and want to see how it will be implemented.
