Nigerian Tribune Journalist wins PWC media excellence award

A Financial journalist with the Nigerian Tribune, Chima Titus Nwokoji, on Friday won the Tax Category of the 2018 PwC Media Excellence Awards.

Mr Nwokoji won the award with his story which warned individuals and corporate organisations against been indifferent to Federal Government’s tax amnesty.

He concluded with available options for those who could not meet up with the deadline for regularisation their tax obligations.

Mr Nwokoji edged Oluseyi Awojulugbe of The Cable who emerged runner-up in the category.

Mr Nwokoji is a graduate of Economics from Imo State University and a holder of Master of Research and Public Policy from the University of Lagos, Akoka Yaba.

The current financial secretary of the Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria ( FICAN), Mr Nwokoji has over 7 years experience reporting business and economy.

In his opening remarks at the award/gala night, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, head of tax and regulatory services, Price Water Coppers (PWC) Nigeria said the 2018 PWC Media Awards is designed to promote quality media reporting in the business space.

According to him, there were 15 entries in Tax, 16 for Capital Market, 26 for SMEs and 69 for Business and Economy reporting.
In all, the 2018 PWC Media Awards received a total of 126 valid entries compared to 83 in 2017.

One of the judges, Professor Ishola Akintoye of the department of accounting, Babcock University used the occasion to advise journalists to pay attention to solutions in their future reports.

While agreeing that developmental journalism is good, he stressed that there was the need to stretch it further to ‘solutions journalism.’

He also said it is important for journalists to know and understand their audience in order to communicate in the language that is not too technical to be understood.
