The Nigerian Peace Corps has said it will not only carry arms, but is also considering deploying high-tech tracking devices that will help its personnel to effectively tackle cultism, bribery, kidnapping and other crimes in the country.
This was just as it announced plans to recruit 2,000 youths to fill slots given to Lagos State, saying both Lagos and Kano had highest quota of over 4,000 because of their very large population.
The organisation is affiliated with the General Support Service Department of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Federal Ministry of Inter- Governmental Affairs, Youth Development and Special Duties, and affiliate of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), among others.
The South-West Zonal Commandant, who also doubles as Lagos State Commandant for the outfit, Mr Mutairu Habib, disclosed this at a press briefing held at the weekend in Lagos, saying the new high- tech device being considered would also help to checkmate erring personnel of other security agencies.
It will be recalled that the National Assembly recently passed the bill establishing the Nigerian Peace Corps and currently, the bill is awaiting presidential accent.
The commandant said the organisation was poised to deliver on its mandate, declaring that the era when crimes were swept under the carpet for lack of proper investigations was over in the country.
