Nigerian music is evolving, Latoya says

Toya Music Records (TMR) leading artiste, Lateef Adeyemi Adedapo, otherwise known as Latoya, has expressed happiness over the quality of music production being churned out by Nigerian music producers, saying that the industry has now evolved to the stage where other African countries are taking a cue.

Latoya, a graduate of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), who got signed to TMR recently, said he was encouraged to follow his passion for music  following the support he got from his record label and family, adding that the industry has grown in leaps and bound.

According to Latoya, who is currently promoting his new song, Desire,  said the music industry has evolved to a very meaningful point with creative music producers dominating the African continent and doing the country proud.

“ I think it’s safe to say we are having proper structure in the industry right now as opposed to three or five years ago. Our music is being recognised worldwide and even being copied by those outside Africa as a whole. I think we are doing pretty good but we can always do better,” he said.

Reacting to insinuations that today’s music corrupts the young minds, Latoya, who is planning to work with Wizkid, Kizz Daniel and other top artistes, said it would be unfair to say that those who work day and night to produce these songs are doing wack music.

According to him, music comes with choice and preference, adding that “I believe this is an issue of choice. We all have the free will to either use something positively or negatively… music has nothing to do with the corruption of youths, if anything, it’s what brings people together.”

Speaking on the recent recent Naira Marley saga with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the singer cautioned the anti-graft agency always have a concrete evidence before attempting to drag people in the media for crimes they never committed.

“With much power comes great responsibility. I believe the efcc are just doing their jobs but if you have no probable cause to detain a suspect then that’s where the line should be drawn. That a person lives a questionable lifestyle doesnt make him a criminal. Investigate and get your facts right before placing an arrest or ruining a persons image,” he said.
