Nigerian leaders oblivious of death, Anglican Primate laments

The late former Minister of Education, Professor Abraham Babalola Borishade, was interred in Usi-Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State on Saturday, with Nigerian leaders urged to always to remember death as they pilloted the affairs of the country.

The Primate, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh, in a sermon at the funeral service at the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew, Usi, said Nigerians should live in remembrance that “we shall all taste death and judgement.”

Okoh, who was represented on the occasion by the Dean of the Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend George Lasebikan, blasted Nigerian leaders for the poverty ravaging the country, saying they were “too corrupt.”

“Nigerian leaders live a larger than life attitude. They are oblivious of death. Impunity is in the character of the  leaders and this is because they haven’t yet remembered that death is just a cycle. Death makes a mockery of all our human fantasies. We give thanks to God for the life of Abraham Babalola Borishade for being an outstanding person,” he stated.

The cleric, who was supported at the service by the Anglican Bishop of Ekiti Oke, Most Reverend Isaac Olubowale, charged leaders and the congregation to live above board and a life worthy of emulation, saying “only what you do well on earth will speak for you after your demise.”

The primate regretted that Nigerian leaders lived  reckless lives without regard for death, disclosing that death shall surely end their lives regardless of whatever they used their positions to amass.

“We have limited time to live on earth, so why amassing wealth at the expense of poor people. We all carried expiry dates. The sufferings of the masses today was caused by the foolishness of some few privileged Nigerians who plundered the commonwealth  without  thinking about the poor.

“They exhibited larger than life attitude. But they must realise that death is just a step away from them, so they must have a rethink so that they can have a memorable end like Prof Borisade,” he counseled.

Okoh described Borisade as a worthy leader and man of commitment, dedication and integrity to the service of the nation, who never abandoned his people when he was the minister.

“This man was a distinguished Nigerian,  a  man of no means reputation to his state , town, church and the entire nation. He shall  be sorely missed by his admirers. He left indelible marks on the sand of time and in the hearts of his people as a generous statesman  and confidant.
