Nigerian farmers to begin sale of yam by weighing

Published by

NIGERIAN farmers would any time soon begin to sell yam by weighing as against the usual means of selling by quantity.

According to the Chairman, Technical Committee on Yam Export Programme, Professor Simon Irtwange, the committee presently has its focus on how to introduce the selling of yam by weight.

“We need to bring a change in the way we do our marketing of yam in.We want to standardise the marketing structure in Nigeria, where we will also introduce the sale of yam by weight.’’ He said.

He noted that the case had become imperative at the moment and so some seed companies would not be selling seeds also by quantity but by weight, with support from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

Irtwange added that “We have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding and we have agreed on N400 per kilogramme of yam cutting.”

The chairman pointed out that the committee was taking into account ways to ensure uniformity in measurement format for the sale of yam locally to tally with international best practice.
