Nigerian digital rights advocate wins DNSRF global research grant

A Nigeria-based digital rights advocate and development practitioner, Wale Bakare, has won a research grant from the DNS Research Federation (DNSRF) based in the United Kingdom.

Bakare also serves as the Director of Partnerships and Sustainability at Webfala Digital Skills for All Initiatives (WDSI), a not-for-profit organization committed to providing digital education, resources, and tools for the delivery of 21st-century digital literacy skills to underserved youth and women in Nigeria.

In a statement by the management of the WDSI, signed by Opeyemi Hamid, the winning submission by the rights advocate, selected among others, is titled “Enhancing Digital Governance in Africa: The Crucial Role of Standards Organizations in Shaping the Internet Landscape.”

“In June 2023, the DNSRF, as part of its ‘The Internet Standards Observatory’ project, launched a call for papers to explore the role of technical standards in shaping the future of the internet and preventing fragmentation, and what cooperation strategies may be required to keep the internet interoperable.

“At the end of the application process, Bakare’s research proposal, titled ‘Enhancing Digital Governance in Africa: The Crucial Role of Standards Organizations in Shaping the Internet Landscape,’ was among the seven exceptional research projects selected for funding by the organization. This was contained in a statement released on the DNSRF website.

In his reaction, Bakare said his winning research proposal would examine the crucial role of standards organisations in shaping the internet landscape within Africa’s continued digital transformation journey.

“The study would shed light on the multifaceted impact of standards organizations on African internet governance, emphasizing the importance of standards organizations in facilitating technological innovation while ensuring interoperability, data privacy, and cybersecurity in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.”

According to him, leveraging standards development is fundamental to ensuring robust, inclusive, and effective internet governance frameworks that align with Africa’s unique challenges and opportunities.
