Nigerian designer, Rahmat Raji, uses tech, empathy to transform lives globally

From Lagos to Seattle, Rahmat Raji is proving that African talent can lead innovation on a global scale. A Nigerian-born product designer with a focus on Human-Computer Interaction, Rahmat is gaining recognition for her inspiring work that blends creativity, research, and deep human empathy.

In a feature interview with Canvas Rebel, a U.S.-based platform spotlighting changemakers, Rahmat shared how her career in design began with a love for graphic design and evolved into a passion for building digital experiences that make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Armed with a Master’s Degree from the University of Washington, she has spent the last several years designing systems that simplify health technology, support scientific discovery, and promote inclusive access to care.

One of her most impactful projects took place right here on the continent—in a rural community in Ghana. There, she led the development of an accessible communication app for children with autism. The innovation came from a deep understanding of both the children’s needs and the local context. Unlike most high-tech solutions, this app was designed to function in low-resource environments, empowering children who have limited ways to express themselves.

The success of the project didn’t stop at improved communication skills—it sparked hope among parents, educators, and researchers who saw the power of user-centered design in action. For Rahmat, this was more than a tech win—it was a career-defining moment that reinforced her purpose: to use design as a bridge between communities and opportunities.

Rahmat’s professional experience spans biotech startups, research institutions, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. At Ozette Technologies in the U.S., she helped scientists make sense of complex data through intuitive design tools. At UW Medicine, she led app redesigns that encouraged physical activity among sedentary patients.

In her interview, Rahmat encouraged young designers to reach beyond their comfort zones and build relationships across disciplines. For her, great design is rooted in listening, learning, and always putting people first.

Rahmat Raji is a proud Nigerian making waves across continents—showing how design, when led by compassion and curiosity, can truly change the world.
