NIGERIA celebrated Democracy Day on Monday. But democracy is obviously in danger when errant members of the nation’s Armed Forces can invade the nation’s tertiary institutions of learning and subject people to untold hardship, violence and brutality.
Without prejudice to the question whether or not some students of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN) are indeed fraudsters as alleged, the invasion of the university by men of the Nigerian Air Force is criminal, and must be speedily looked into by the Air Force authorities.
It is indeed saddening that in a democracy, university lecturers can be beaten up in the presence of their students.
The situation is worsened by the fact that they committed no crime. It is also saddening that students’ hostels can be thrown into turmoil by gun and machete-wielding terrorists in military uniform. Those who carried out the attacks will do worse next time if they are not punished.
