Nigeria recorded fewer COVID-19 cases, deaths, more recoveries last week

Nigeria’s weekly COVID-19 (coronavirus) cases, recoveries, deaths and samples tested last week reduced as the country failed to undertake up to 15,000 tests per day, Tribune Online reports.

A total of 1,822 new cases were reported last week (August 23 – 29), compared to the 3,137 cases recorded the previous week (August 16 – 22).

Data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) showed that 24,047 tests were conducted last week, 27,434 samples were tested the previous week which shows there is a reduction.

Last week marked the 35th week since the outbreak of the pandemic in February and so far Nigeria has tested 402,070. 53,727 cases have been confirmed, 41,314 recoveries and 1011 deaths.

Low testing, deaths, more recoveries

For two weeks consecutively, the number of samples tested has gone down. A total 32,913 samples were tested from August 9 to 15, compared to the 27,434 recorded the penultimate week (August 16 – 22) and 24,047 conducted last week (August 23 – 29).

On the average, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) test 3,435 samples daily last week.

This represents a shortfall of 11,565 additional samples that the country could have taken advantage of considering the fact that the country has the capacity to test 15,000 samples daily.

The country also recorded fewer deaths and more recoveries last week compared to the previous weeks.

A total of 2,547 patients recovered and were discharged last week unlike the 2,477 recoveries of the previous week.

Also, 14 deaths were reported last week compared to the 23 deaths of the previous week.

Confirmed cases so far

So far, 53,727 cases have been confirmed, 41,314 cases have been discharged 1011 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Currently, there are only 11,402 active cases in Nigeria.

Lagos State which is the epicentre of the virus has recorded 18,173 cases, followed by FCT – 5,149, Oyo – 3,107, Edo – 2,577, Plateau – 2,374, Rivers – 2,134, Kaduna – 2,114, Delta – 1,744, Kano – 1,725, Ogun – 1,646, Ondo – 1,534, Enugu – 1,155, Ebonyi – 973, Kwara – 958, Katsina – 789, Osun – 779, Borno – 763, Abia – 763, Gombe – 723, Bauchi – 666, Imo – 527, Benue – 451, Nasarawa – 434, Bayelsa – 391, Jigawa – 322, Akwa Ibom – 278, Niger – 241, Ekiti – 262, Adamawa – 221, Anambra – 207, Sokoto – 158, Kebbi – 93, Cross River – 82, Zamfara – 78, Taraba – 87, Yobe – 67, Kogi – 5.

During last Thursday’s Presidential Task Force (PTF) briefing, the Chairman, Boss Mustapha, warned that the epicentre of the virus is shifting even as the number of fatalities and confirmed infections is declining in the country.

“We all recall that Lagos, Kano and Ogun states were the initial epi-centres and this to Oyo at a time, and now Plateau State.”

Last week’s cases

On Sunday, 322 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the country, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 52,227.

On Monday, 321 new cases of the pandemic were reported in the country, taking the total to 52,548.

On Tuesday, 252 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded, bringing the tally of confirmed cases to 52,800.

On Wednesday, 221 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the country.

On Thursday, 296 new cases were reported in Nigeria.

On Friday, 160 new cases of the pandemic were recorded.

On Saturday, 250 new cases were reported in Nigeria, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 53,727 out of which 41,314 have recovered and 1,011 have died.
