Nigeria planning to engage war with Niger Republic, fake news — Sen Nwebonyi

The Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation and Water Resources, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi has described it as fake news, the news spreading in the country that Nigeria is planning a war against the Niger Republic.

According to Nwebonyi, Nigeria will never engage in any war against Niger Republic instead the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) will go to war against the military in Niger Republic.

According to him, there is no law backing the military action in the Niger Republic, however, described as an aberration the invasion of the military to the Government House instead of staying at their barracks to protect the citizens of their country.

Nwebonyi who is representing Ebonyi North zone at the 10th Senate stated this in his Abakaliki residence when his constituents paid him the Ojiji festival (new yam festival) visit on Saturday.

His words ” Nigeria will never go to war against the Niger Republic, instead, ECOWAS will go to war against the military and not Niger citizens because what they are doing is not backed by any law be it international protocol, convention and treaties.

” The actions of the military are an aberration for a man on kaki to seat on the Government house is not advisable and nobody should support that. That is why I said let’s be more patriotic.

“Our president and chairman of ECOWAS are doing what he is doing on behalf of ECOWAS. But people are saying that Nigeria what’s to launch a war against the Niger Republic noo we have no problem against Niger but Niger has a problem against ECOWAS.

Nwebonyi further said, “Even the UN condemned what the military are doing they did it in Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad and the Niger Republic. We shouldn’t pray for war”.
